The Scoville scale is a measurement of the spicy heat (or piquance) of a chili pepper. It is named after its creator, American pharmacist Wilbur Scoville. His method, devised in 1912, is known as the Scoville Organoleptic Test. The number of Scoville heat units (SHU) in a particular pepper indicates the amount of capsaicin present. What is Capsaicin? It is a chemical compound that stimulates chemoreceptor nerve endings in the skin, especially the mucous membranes.

This is “Atomic Eh?” reporting in on a very exciting, very heated, and internally explosive “Atomic” product. First we must begin with…”Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy HOT SAUCE!!!!!” Okay, okay, maybe not, but you may wish to become a little “spiritual” before you try it. For some, it could be an idol to put on a shelf, for others it could be a way to “squawk” in foreign tongues, and for others it might just take you to your knees in prayer…begging the good Lord to “JUST TAKE THE HEAT AWAY!” For me, it’s just another way to “ENJOY” the better things in life!

I gotta say, right off the bat, that I love the label. The “Insane” chicken is giving up the ghost. I don’t think it’s the “Holy Ghost,” but it’s definitely something that will make you wonder where you will end up after consuming this product! Insane Chicken says, “Cluckin’ Hot Ghost Pepper Sauce is a near death experience in a bottle!” The final directions state: “Pray before opening.” No exclamation…just a simple statement…that needs no explanation. But you can’t find out if you don’t have one.
Okay, lets talk about the “Ghost pepper” otherwise known as the Bhut Jolokia Pepper. This IS THE HOTTEST PEPPER IN THE WORLD. If you want something hotter, walk up to your local Police or Highway Patrol officer and say, “excuse me officer, can I have a shot of your pepper spray on my barbeque?” Yes folks, this might be the perfect “pepper spray” for you barbeque. The “Ghost Pepper” is hot, and the only thing hotter is pepper spray and/or some of the amazing pepper extracts out there. But enough of that…let’s talk sauce!

The color looks great. As I tilt the bottle it appears to be a thick sauce. The color is kind of reminiscent of the taco bell hot sauce packages I use to get as a kid. You might know what I am talking about. The sauce packages you have to open 15 times just to consume one of their nasty burritos. Then of course I don’t have to remind you what happens 6-8 hours later! But this is from Insanechicken.com so there is hope.

It smells of vinegar and spices, just as it should. The sauce tastes good–lots of flavor! Expect the heat to stay with you for a while. A little grainy in consistency but over all I can say that I just want more. There is definitely a “Ghost Pepper” flavor, which is nice, and even though it’s eight in the morning I instantly want to find the nearest Mexican Restaurant. I like the sauce and I think it will travel with me today as my family and I explore our weekend. It’s one of those sauces that I find has a flavor I really like, but one that forces me to quit half way through a meal due to the heat factor. Well not today! I am up for the challenge, are you? Apply liberally to your food and have no fear! (Just maybe have some milk close by!)

This is “Atomic Eh?” telling you that this sauce is “atomic”! I would rate this sauce a 4 out of 5 for label, consistency, flavor, and heat!

Blair’s Mega Death Sauce Review

Blair’s Mega Death Sauce – How much would you pay for a one-inch-tall plastic skull keychain? At Insane Chicken, they sell one for $9.95 and it comes with a free bottle of Blair’s Mega Death Sauce in a special limited edition “20/20” bottle that is 20% hotter than the usual formulation to commemorate 20 years of causing intense pain to its customers. When it arrives, enjoy the keychain; I’m not sure the sauce is meant to be enjoyed.

Before you even open the bottle, the plethora of dire warnings suggest that it might be wiser to just stick with the keychain. “Warning: This product contains the hottest known ingredients on the planet earth. Please use with extreme caution.” “This sauce contains ingredients 650 times hotter than a jalapeño chile. Use sparingly. Not recommended for use without dilution.” You can’t help but wonder why it doesn’t come with a child-safety cap.

The sauce uses habanero, cayenne, and chipotle peppers. What makes it hotter than most is that most sauce have vinegar or some other base as the lead ingredient, and then the peppers and other ingredients come after. Blair’s Mega Death Sauce lists the habaneros and cayenne peppers first, followed by vinegar. This means the sauce is thick and contains lots of bits of pepper skin and seeds, without much of a mediating solution to temper the heat.

I’d love to be able to tell you that the molasses, guava puree, and ginger add complexity to the recipe and a tantalizingly sweet finish to the original layer of heat. But the fact is, you can’t taste anything but fire when you taste it pure (which I did, despite the warning to dilute it, because that’s the only way to truly judge what the sauce tastes like). And even when you add it to sauces or condiments, you have to use such small amounts that no single flavor in particular cuts through.

Which is not to say you shouldn’t buy Blair’s Mega Death Sauce, but just be forewarned that this isn’t one of those sauce that talk big but don’t deliver. Mega Death really is killer hot. Too hot for this reviewer – although I really am enjoying the skull keychain.

Blair’s Mega Death has a stunning rich red color and is loaded with pepper seeds and bits of pepper skin. If you don’t shake it well, you can actually see the very dark red liquid the makers of the sauce call liquid rage.

If you don’t shake this sauce well and happen to get a hit of that liquid rage, I feel sorry for you. I’m not sure what makes the liquid rage part of Blair’s Mega Death Sauce, but it is killer hot. I made the mistake of tasting straight from the bottle without shaking. That’s an amateur mistake to begin with, and in this case, I paid for it dearly.

Let’s talk about the other factors of Blair’s Mega Death Sauce, shall we? It smells delicious. There’s an intense smoky aroma that made my mouth water for a taste. Unfortunately, due to my earlier lack of common sense, I couldn’t handle another taste immediately. When I was finally able to give it another shot (and after shaking the bottle vigorously), I got a couple of nice surprises. The first was that the heat level, while not as intense as taking a straight dose of the mysterious liquid rage, was well beyond easy to manage. Blair’s Mega Death Sauce is pure hot. Definitely not for someone who doesn’t know how to exercise caution. If you can’t take the heat, get out of this kitchen.

The second surprise was the flavor of Blair’s Mega Death. Actually, there were two more surprises. Not only the flavor, but the fact that I could taste anything through the heat. I did taste, though, and if you can get past the fire, the flavor of this sauce is quite pleasant. The ingredients include red habanero pods and cayenne chilies, natural pepper flavor, ancho chilies, chipotle chilies, molasses, guava nectar, fresh ginger, salt, and spices. All of these ingredients play well together. The pepper combinations are exceptional. The chipotle shines through with an overall smokey note that provides a backdrop for all the other flavors to work together against. It’s amazing to me how all of these layers combine so well to bring out a rich, satisfying dimension in flavor, even in the face of such an enormous heat factor.

I’m not going to tell you to use Blair’s Mega Death Sauce freely and without consideration for heat. It should be used as an additive, with large quantities of food. Believe me, you won’t lose the flavor or the fire in your belly. It works great to kick up other sauces or to add flavor and fire to dips, soup, chili, or eggs. Just remember to shake the damn bottle.

Even though the name implies otherwise, you will definitely feel alive after even just the smallest amount of Blair’s Mega Death Hot Sauce. This is one of the hottest sauces on the market but not the spiciest for Blair’s which claims their Ultra Death is even hotter.

The bottle comes in a box and contains Blair’s signature skull keychain, which is proof positive that you survived death. The warning label proclaims, “Be warned: this sauce contains ingredients 500 times hotter than a jalapeno chile. Use sparingly. Not recommended for use without dilution.”

I am sure there are some daring chile lovers out there but this is one forceful sauce not to be reckoned with. There is yet another warning label that states the product contains the hottest known ingredients on the planet so I knew this sauce was not for the feint of heart.

The Mega Death sauce is made with red habanero pods, cayenne chiles, white vinegar, natural pepper flavor, ancho chile, chipotle chiles, molasses, guava nectar, ginger, salt and spices. I decided to try the smallest amount on a chicken taco. The blazing heat was felt almost immediately and I could almost instantaneously feel the sweat forming on my brow. The heat lingered for a long time and I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to continue eating my meal.

After a while, the heat seemed to wear off and it was only then I started to taste some of the ingredients. The overwhelming red habanero pods are what give the sauce so much heat but when the pain wears off, you can taste not only a hint of chipotle but also the sweet molasses and ginger.

One simple drop in a batch of chili might even be too overpowering but could certainly be diluted with some tomato sauce. The heat from this sauce is definitely overwhelming, which was exactly what I expected, but I have to admit I did not anticipate the flavorful ending, which was a nice surprise. I am not sure how often I will actually use this but when I feel the need to kick things up a notch, I will certainly reach for Blair’s Mega Death Hot Sauce.

The addition of “liquid rage” is guaranteed to make you “feel alive!”

So, you think you’ve had a hot sauce before? Maybe it was the most painful looking option you could find in your local grocery store, something with claims of pain and horrible nights ahead on the bottle. The odds are it was surprisingly hot, but not nearly up to the task of destroying your tongue in the manner you expected. Enter Blair’s Mega Death Hot Sauce. This sauce claims a heat factor of over 500,000 scovilles, more than 500 times hotter than a Jalapeno. It’s not just that it’s so incredibly hot though. There are a few hot sauces out there that claim to be hotter – and for my money it doesn’t matter at a certain point. It’s about the raw kick in the butt this stuff will give you, regardless of the dilution you give it.

I’ve recommended dilution for hot sauces with half as much heat and ingredients as this and they still managed to scald the various parts of my digestive system with the cold iron fist of a supreme hot sauce. This is hotter. If you purchase Blair’s Mega Death, do not plan on dabbing a drop on your tongue to “get a feel for it”. You’re likely looking at the kind of agonizing pain you witness in the throws of a Tarantino torture scene. No, this is a diluter by all means. If you have not tasted and survived similar products in the past, do not eat this sauce straight up.

That said, I loved Blair’s Mega Death Hot Sauce. This was the kind of hot sauce you can brag to your friends about trying and surviving, then laugh at them when they collapse in agony from the drop you put in their soup. It’s a powerful, steel-tipped kick to the butt and you should be ready for it. Tasting-wise, I reckoned a good home made chili would be the perfect venue.

Comprised of a litany of ingredients collected by an uncle a couple of generations back, the family chili recipe has always been a favorite. Usually employing fresh peppers instead of hot sauces, it has a kick all by itself, the kind that turns a bowl of chili into a two hour ordeal and requires half a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk. I made the same chili, split it in two and tossed the peppers in one, and the Mega Death in the other. At first, I gave it a single drop of mega death, but thought better of it and added two more.

Let’s just say that the effects of three drops of this stuff into a one quart pot of chili was absolutely phenomenal. The aftertaste was engaging and when the burning subsided, I was excited to dive into a bit more. It beat out my fresh pepper made chili and managed to anger my girlfriend when I gave her a kiss (beware, it lingers on the lips). If you’re looking for a solid, long-lasting, throat searing sauce, you can’t do much better than Blair’s Mega Death.
