Roadhouse Original BBQ Sauce Review

The label on Roadhouse Original BBQ Sauce shows a roadhouse. The color on the label is a light orange, as if the sun is rising around the house. In the picture, smoke slips out of the house’s chimney and dances on the breeze, remind one of the type of smoky smell that you meet along backcountry roads that makes your mouth water.

When I opened the bottle, my nose was very pleased. I smelled raisons, smoke, tomato and a sweet fruit that I couldn’t immediately place by scent. The Roadhouse Original BBQ Sauce had a beautiful unique smell, and it is a beautiful, unique sauce. On taste I identified the fruit as pineapple, and also tasted the raisons, smoke and tomato sauce, as well as onion. The onion and fruits are not ground into the sauce but rather left in tiny pieces, making the sauce have a great texture of very thick and chunky. It was delicious and unusual. It was easy to see why it has received so many awards, such as the Kansas City International BBQ Cookoff  Peoples Choice Award three years in a row.

The Roadhouse Original BBQ Sauce will not be winning any awards in any barbeque festival’s  heat categories; it has no heat. But it doesn’t pretend to. There are not peppers in the ingredient list. The label says “Sweet & Smokey,” with a back panel adding, “an all purpose family style sauce that is bursting with robust flavor!” That is a description that I would agree with.

For those who crave heat, add Roadhouse Original BBQ Sauce to your own homemade hot barbeque sauce or to your favorite pre-made hot barbecue sauce. The tomato and vinegar base make it easy to add to most barbecue sauces. The unique flavor of fruit and smoke will add an extra level of enjoyment to your favorite sauce (and your favorite sauce will add the heat that you crave). I mixed this sauce with Dave’s Gourmet Badlands Barbeque and thought it was a winning combination.

That’s not to say that Roadhouse BBQ Sauce doesn’t stand alone; it does (just not to chile addicts). I enjoyed this sauce on its own too, and will probably buy another bottle when this one is empty. Many mild sauces aren’t strong enough to be served with beef, but the flavors here were strong enough for a positive match. It is also great with pork, chicken and beans. A recipe on the back suggests using it on turkey, which I feel would work well.
