Recipe for Mustard Based BBQ Sauce

If you are a pork lover, there is something about using mustard with it that works.  It is great for slathering on a large pork roast or piece of loin that will seal in all of those lovely juices and just make it tender and delicious.  In South Carolina, it is dang near a requirement to have a mustard based bbq sauce with your pork, but many BBQ enthusiasts all over the world are starting to enjoy the flavor and work with mustard.

Making the mustard sauce bbq recipes are rather simple and if you do some searches, you will find many variations of the same one that originated in South Carolina from German immigrants. The tanginess from the mustard and a bit of sweet from the sugar, just make it work well together.  Here is a simple and tasty recipe that you can work with easily for your next BBQ.

Mustard Based BBQ Sauce Recipe

1 cup yellow mustard or Dijon style mustard
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
1/4 cup white vinegar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper

In a large saucepan combine together all of the above ingredients in the order they are given in the recipe, stirring after each ingredient addition. Bring temperature up to a boil and then reduce heat to medium heat. Simmer BBQ sauce over medium heat, stirring often for 10-13 minutes or until done.

You can use this sauce as a marinade for pork or as a dipping sauce. It is best used before the meat is done grilling or smoking so as not to burn due to the sugar.
