Pappy’s XXX White Lightnin’ BBQ Sauce Review

Pappy's White Lightnin' BBQ SaucePappy’s White Lightnin’ BBQ Sauce proves that no one is regulating how many X’s someone can put on the label of a hot sauce or barbecue sauce. Pappy’s White Lightnin’ BBQ Sauce has three X’s and they shouldn’t. They only have a small heat. Triple X suggests a sauce that will start a bonfire on your esphogus. This one only sparks your tongue.

You can smell tomato, a little vinegar and a little heat when you open Pappy’s. You will taste the tomato, vinegar and heat as well as hickory smoke, sugar, garlic, onion, and a little taste of Kentucky bourbon on the edges (just as it hits the mouth, and also just as the flavor leaves).

There is a small spike of heat, then is disappears. Like the heat, the flavor also does not stay long, in fact, it leaves while you are still chewing the food, leaving you with a mouthful of meat rather than a mouthful of heat.

It tastes fine, my disappointment lies with the lack of lingering flavor as well as the hype. I would have been happier if it was named “Pappy’s Sweet and Smokey Sauce with a Small Spike of Heat” or something shorter and catchier that essentially conveyed the same idea rather than pretending to be an XXX sauce. This sets up a whole string of chile heads for disappointment.

The rest of the marketing is quite clever; Pappy’s has a real wordsmith on their hands. Though there is an ingredient list on the back of the bottle, on the front of the label it says, “Ingredients: If we’re not tellin’ the revenue boyz-we’re not tellin’ you.”  This is just one of the rebellious fun comments on the bottle.

Pappy’s further describes their product as containing “Bourbon alcohol (The most the feds will allow!) Enjoy ‘A nip of goodness from the hills’ that starts—oh so smooth—and finishes with just a kiss of Southern love.” It is one of those bottles that chile consumers spend twenty minutes reading in the hot sauce store. I give it an A+ for entertainment. I wish I could say the same for the flavor.

The sauce is dark red, speckled with spices. The sauce is thin in the bottle. It thickens when cooked but the flavor does not get much stronger. Pappy’s White Lightnin’ BBQ Sauce is shaped like an old-style medicine bottle, which makes it easy to pour.
