Matteo’s Red Headed Step Sauce Review

Matteo’s Red Headed Step Sauce is truly a one-of-a-kind tasting hot sauce. Greenish brown in color, infused with large chunks of ingredients, and easily pourable, Red Headed Step Sauce is like salsa in a bottle.

The ingredients include tomato juice, roasted jalpeno peppers, red wine vinegar, onions, carrots, lime juice, red chili peppers, garlic, and olive oil. Don’t let the inclusion of two types of peppers fool you, though. Red Headed Step Sauce is extremely mild with a fresh taste. While you won’t be using it to heat anything up, it will make an enjoyable addition to chip dip or any Mexican cosine.

Red Headed Step Sauce is a beginner’s hot sauce. If you have kids wanting to experience the world of hot sauce, let them play with this. It’s mild enough, they could drop an entire bottle on their food and not get hurt in the process. Your grandmother, who can’t eat a bell paper without drinking a glass of milk, will be able to use this sauce. It’s also perfect for those who want to feel like they’re hanging with the big dogs without actually using the hard stuff. Red Headed Step Sauce is easy to take.

I’m not saying the lack of heat is a downfall for the sauce. I’m definitely saying it isn’t going to satisfy anyone’s need for heat. It isn’t even going to satisfy anyone’s need for a little spice. What it does having going for it is a clean, light vegetable taste with citrus overtones. The flavors are a complement to not only Mexican-based foods, but work well in soups and as a vegetable dip.

Would I use this sauce on a regular basis? No. I like my sauce hotter, with a more complex set of ingredients. I’m interested in taking it to the edge, where heat is almost over the top. I used Red Headed Step Sauce on the side, with my fried eggs and bacon breakfast, and enjoyed it just fine, but I would have preferred to stick with something a little more heat orientated.

A friend of mine, on the other hand, thinks this sauce is top of the line. He poured a healthy portion on two tacos and thought it was as good as it gets. I agree with him that this sauce is a great taco topper, but gain, I want something hotter.

That’s the bottom line with Red Headed Step Sauce. If you’re a beginner and want the illusion of using hot sauce without the heat factor, this will work for you. It does taste good. If you want heat, you won’t be saying, “I’ll eat you like a Red Headed Step Sauce” anytime soon.
