Iguana XXX Habanero Pepper Sauce Review

Of all the hot pepper sauces that add carrots for sweetness and color, this just might be my favorite. Iguana XXX Habanero Pepper Sauce has a lot of heat and a lot of flavor, and one never gets sacrificed for the other. It’s fast becoming my preferred brand.

The ingredient list is headlined with the catchy – and true – phrase, “All Killer, No Filler.” Sure enough, there’s nothing here that you need to be a chemist to understand. Fresh ripe habaneros lead the list and the sauce does indeed have a fresh vegetable taste. Then comes carrots, vinegar, onions, lime juice, tomato paste, salt, and garlic. Ascorbic acid (which is simply vitamin C) is used as a preservative. All natural and good for you, too.

Typically, my first move when trying a new hot sauce is to put a drop on my finger and taste it on its own. Then I try it on food. With Iguana, though, I kept tasting it on my finger. It was plenty hot (“pretty damn hot” the label says) but I couldn’t get over the nice, fresh flavor. This is a really good everyday sauce if you really like heat but you also like to taste your food. Iguana will complement and enhance your dishes, giving you all the heat you care to handle and serving as a legitimate condiment rather than a novelty corrosive.

I’ve used Iguana on pasta, burgers, chicken pot pie, and fried chicken. I’ve used it to on its own and to spice up ketchup. I plan to use it the next time I make Bloody Marys and I have new incentive to make up a batch of my veggie chili. And I still sneak a taste on my finger, too. It has yet to fail me.

Iguana is made in Costa Rica, which may account for its fresh taste. It’s very likely that the habaneros are grown there as well. About the only thing I don’t care for is the label, which features a drawing of an iguana wearing a firefighter’s hat. Personally, reptiles give me the willies. But Iguana Habanero Pepper Sauce gives me the thrillies. I highly and heartily recommend it.
