Hot Dog Onion Sauce Recipe

Hot Dogs are one of America’s favorite foods and it seems you will find American’s enjoying all kinds of tasty gourmet condiments on them. Today we are sharing a recipe with you on how to make New York style Onion Sauce which is a favorite hot dog topping with New Yorker’s. This one adds at bit of chili powder and hot pepper sauce for that kick you love! This is not a meat sauce which is enjoyed in other parts of the country.

Hot Dog Onion Sauce Recipe

2 tablespoons olive or vegetable oil
2 medium onions, finely chopped
1/4 cup catsup
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
2-3 drops of hot pepper sauce (depends on how hot you want it)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup water

In a medium sized saucepan saute the onions in the oil until the onions are translucent (about 5 minutes). Stir in the rest of the ingredients in the order they are given in the recipe, stirring after each addition. Reduce heat and simmer sauce over medium heat for 10-12 minutes or until done. Use sauce as a hot dog condiment.

Tip: You can refrigerate any leftovers for up to one week. Warm up the sauce in your microwave when needed.
