Goin’ Bananas Hot Sauce Review

Goin’ Bananas hot sauce” advertises itself as a medium hot, Caribbean inspired sauce made with ingredients like bananas, raisins, Worcestershire sauce, and honey.  Because I enjoy all of these things, I was more than excited to test this puppy out.

The label is a vibrant splash of color showcasing a charming cartoon of Carmen Banana, the mascot for the Key West brand.  Looking as beautiful as a banana can when dressed in an elaborate hat, a string of beads, and make-up, Carmen claims the sauce to be “a delight with chicken, burgers, ice cream, seafood — and GREAT as a grill sauce!”  While initially intrigued to follow Carmen’s advice and try it on ice cream, it was 9:30 in the morning when I first broke the safety seal, so I opted for starting instead with topping my eggs.

Personally, I only enjoy bananas when they are still a tad unripe and still a little bit green.  Therefore, the sweet taste of this sauce caused me to think only of brown bananas, and thus deterred me from upping the anti and dressing my home fries in it.  I couldn’t imagine something that tastes so sweet to be more than mild, and right I was.  The temperature barely registered on my heat index, though I will say that I have a very high heat tolerance so I may not always be the best person to reference when talking about heat.  I decided to give the sauce a second chance at dinner, and marinated some chicken breast in a bowl of the sauce for two hours prior to grilling it.  Needless to say, I was not disappointed.

All in all, “Goin’ Bananas hot sauce” presents an impressive showing of flavor.  While the sauce’s sweetness was initially off-putting, in a fruit-based sauce, a touch of sugar is an essential element.  The sauce really shone when used as a marinade verses as a topping or dipping sauce.  I would recommend this sauce to anyone looking for something different than your average savory hot sauce, and if you don’t like it at first, then be sure to give it another chance as a marinade.  Of course, if you don’t care for bananas, absolutely nothing about this sauce will be even remotely appealing to you.  But if you’re looking for a mild, tangy sauce to coat some meat in, a dance with Carmen Banana might just be worth your while.
