Dave’s Total Insanity Hot Sauce Review
When you open a bottle of Dave’s Total Insanity Hot Sauce, the heat immediately hits your nose and lights a fire, and then you know that this sauce is not for the weak—it’s for chile heads. The heat is not the only thing that your nose will notice. Dave’s Total Insanity Sauce is made of red chiles, vinegar and a hint of garlic.
Dave’s Total Insanity Hot Sauce tastes of red chiles, lime juice, garlic, onions, tomato sauce and vinegar. But the real star is the heat, an intense, sweating heat that stays around for a long time. The heat is provided by red chiles and hot pepper extract.
The ingredient list includes blackberry wine, which surprised me. There is no hint of blackberry wine or blackberry anything in the scent of Dave’s Total Insanity Hot Sauce, nor is there any hint in the taste. I wonder why it is in their ingredient list. It seems like it is not a cheap ingredient, so why did the company waste it on a sauce where it is buried?
Like all Dave’s Gourmet Hot Sauces, the front of the label has a chile pepper under a beach umbrella on a beach with a blazing sun. This picture includes a head of garlic sitting next to the pepper. Like the pepper, it wears shades. The head of garlic is larger than the pepper, which seems to suggest that this sauce is more about garlic than it is about pepper. That is not accurate. Though you will taste the garlic, you will mostly taste, and feel, the pepper.
Dave’s Gourmet ranks the sauce on their hot scale as “Insane.” Dave’s Total Insanity Sauce is at their highest rating, and it is a rating that I agree with. They say, “Insane Heat with a Garlicky Flavor!” (Yes, garlicky is a real word, and it is spelled that way.) I would have also mentioned the lime flavor in the catch phrase, and included a lime in the picture on the beach, right next to the pepper and head of garlic. The lime juice is as dominant a flavor as the garlic, although neither is dominant at all compared to the red chiles and hot pepper extract. Again, the sauce is really about the heat.
The rest of the label is plum. Dave’s Total Insanity Sauce itself is rusty-orange. It is much thicker than many hot sauces.
