As someone who religiously tops pizza with hot sauce and in turn dips the crust in barbeque sauce, Mad Dog’s Ghost BBQ Sauce and its promise to serve up an “intense BBQ experience” immediately intrigued me. I’ve had a few run-ins with Mad Dog’s Original BBQ Sauce in my day, but I’ve also found myself toeing the line with the ghost pepper (or Bhut Jolokia) as of late, a pepper that has a history of providing a hefty dose of spice and has caused my eyes to tear up on more than one occasion. Feelings about the ghost pep aside, Mad Dog has had my number for years, and it didn’t take a huge leap of faith for me to pour a generous amount of this new sauce on to my plate. And “pour” is the optimal word here – after a good shake, the sauce flowed out from the bottle’s wide mouth with ease and pooled into a puddle next to my pizza. There was nothing watery in the least about this sauce.

Upon dipping my first slice of pizza (chicken sausage with caramelized onions, ricotta and red sauce spread over a thing crust), I became an immediate convert from the Original version to the newer, spicier member of the Mad Dog BBQ family. The thick, rich sauce boasts a unique, smoky flavor with hints of garlic and tomato that is complimented by the heat of the pepper, rather than overpowered by the spice. While I chose to douse my pizza in it, the sauce would make a dynamite burger on a hot summer night, or the perfect chicken marinade. Plus, the label boasts all natural ingredients – so really, everybody wins (unless you hate BBQ sauce, in which case, why are you still reading this review?).

Overall: an intense but extremely enjoyable experience that restored my faith in the ghost pepper and made me a further believer in Mad Dog.

I know a girl named Bethany and she rarely has the blues, so I knew this sauce wasn’t hers. Actually, it comes from Bethany Beach in Delaware. As far as beaches go, you don’t hear about Bethany Beach all that much, but you should hear about this grilling sauce because it’s quite nice. Flexible, too, since while it’s called a grilling sauce, on the side of the label it’s referred to as a “dipping sauce and marinade for grilled or smoked pork, beef, seafood, chicken or wild game.”

That sounds nearer to the target because Bethany Blues Papaya Grillin’ Sauce has very little in the way of viscosity going for it. In other words, it won’t coat a piece of meat on a grill the way a traditional barbecue sauce would. But with it’s acidity from tomatoes, vinegar, and lime juice, and its papaya fruitiness, it does make a richly flavored marinade that will work its way into the fibers of your raw animal flesh.

Bethany Blues is composed of a small selection of good, well-chosen ingredients: tomato concentrate, brown sugar, apple juice, corn syrup, vinegar, molasses, fresh squeezed lime juice, ripe papaya, garlic, salty, red pepper, anchovies, and natural spices. Surprisingly, it’s not overly sweet, the more savory ingredients (tomato, vinegar, garlic, anchovies) doing a good job cutting through the sweeter ones. As a result, it imparts great flavor that won’t overwhelm the natural flavors of the food you use it on.

I can see adding this to the sauce for a stuffed cabbage, especially with the vinegar and apple juice. My other’s recipe is based on guava jelly and chili sauce, and Bethany Blues would complement those ingredients very nicely. It’s actually the same consistency as tomato juice and if I had vodka in the house at the moment, I’d be tempted to make a Bloody Mary out of it. Not to flavor it, but to use it as the tomato juice component. I have a feeling I’m going to find lots of uses for this.

When I think of key limes, I think of key lime pie. I didn’t expect this deep reddish-brown sauce to taste like key lime pie. But the other thing I generally use lime juice for are margaritas. And lo and behold, there really is tequila in Key West Key Lime BBQ Sauce! Which is not to say it tastes like a margarita because it doesn’t. But that’s OK, because I don’t want a barbecue sauce that tastes like a margarita. I want a barbecue sauce with a rich, robust flavor and that’s exactly what this sauce delivers.

The ingredients are fairly standard for the most part: tomatoes, brown sugar, sugar, corn syrup, soy sauce, tequila, Worcestershire sauce, lime juice, New Mexico chiles (would love to know exactly what those are), garlic, onion, salt, spices, and natural mesquite flavor. The sweet ingredients are counterbalanced by the salty soy and savory Worcestershire sauces, the tomatoes and the smoke stand out, but unfortunately the familiar tequila bite and any heat at all from the chiles are nowhere to be found.

Key West Key Lime BBQ Sauce is plenty thick so one solution would be merely to add tequila and hot sauce, but it works quite well on its own as a serviceable standard barbecue sauce. It has a more complex flavor than typical tomato-based barbecue sauces and therefore likely works well on a broader range of food items. I would rub the meat to be grilled with a nice spicy spice rub, with lots of peppercorns and crushed red pepper, then grill it until it’s almost done, adding Key West Key Lime BBQ Sauce near the end. The thick sauce will bring sweet and smoke to the spice-crusted meat – a combination that makes my mouth water just thinking of it.

Hello Fellow Spice Addicts!

Life is good on the west coast! For just a moment, the sun was shinning and the temperature was inching up-FINALLY! Spring was on the horizon. But alas, winter reared its ugly head and the cold, damp rain is back with a vengeance. So I was passing through a cold, damp Sunday afternoon, when something outside my window caught my eye. Our family cat had decided to convey to me in not too many words, that if I was not going to put the grill into action then she was. For those that are animal lovers out there…snoring is about the most action she does these days. It’s not that she can’t do other things; it’s just that I don’t think she really wants to do anything else. It must be a good life!

So I was faced with a mental dilemma. Do I follow in her paw prints and take a short nap? (Not on the barbeque of course!) Or do I fire up the grill and put it into action? Well, after a short nap, I decided to put the fire to the grill! Seems like I am always armed with a savory piece of beef or chicken that is just begging to be roasted. Fortunately for us, I also have some very “Atomic” and spicy hot links. Today, I have a great sauce that I am going to try. It’s called…

Bear Claw Chipotle Barbeque Sauce.
“This will burn the fur off your pooper!!”
That is what they say anyway…

With one hand clutching a large, awkward umbrella, and one hand filled with “the tongs of life!” other wise known to Mrs. Eh as “the tongs”. (I like my name for them far better!) I heated up a rain soaked grill, seasoned the huge tri tip that I have, and loaded everything on the grill. Bear Claw Chipotle BBQ Sauce comes in a nice, pint sized bottle. About 12.7 oz of blistering BBQ sauce. I have not tried this product before, but I have seen it around. The bottle’s label is bright yellow with a huge bear claw in the middle. As far as detail and artistry, there is not much to offer but if you find yourself loving this sauce it will be easy to spot on a shelf.

When I opened the bottle, I notice that the sauce is thick and red. So I closed it up, shook it well, and attempted to pour it out. This didn’t work so well, so I poked a knife in it a couple times, and from that point on I had no problem getting it out. The sauce has a sweet, spicy aroma. I can definitely smell the tomatoes, Worcestershire Sauce, and garlic. It has pineapple in the ingrediants, but I could not distinguish that from just smelling it and/or tasting it. The sauce packs a lot of heat and surprised me because a lot of sauces that just use chipotle peppers are not that hot in my opinion. The heat stays steady as I eat. It doesn’t really build like some extreme sauces can. It’s not a sauce that could hurt an unsuspecting guest. On the back of the bottle, the label goes on to say,

“You’ll know why the bear does “it” in the woods, when you feel the Claw tearing at your fur tomorrow.” But give it a try on pineapple chicken kabobs, served over a bed of rice, and let the Claw go to work! The eerie screeching sound that you hear in the woods??? The Claw’s latest victim!!!

I love this! But I might grow to hate it…I’ll tell you in the morning! The sauce was tasty. It had a nice color, good consistency, and everyone that I shared it with enjoyed it. It was though suggested that we try it on other things besides beef—like chicken or pork. I would give it a four out of five. They also have other products. All of these products you can find at Insanechicken.com. Just ask for Chris! This is “Atomic Eh?” telling you that whether its rain, snow, hail, sunshine…keep the barbeque hot and keep you food spicy! Most of all, Enjoy!

Rock ‘n Roll my Barbeque…if you dare!

Hey to all you chili heads out there and Barbeque addicts. As I continue my quest in hunting, acquiring, and best of all, consuming some of the finest, tastiest, and hottest sauces out there, I must take just a moment to tell you about,

Mad Anthony’s Barbeque Sauce.

Insanechicken.com once again has provided me with a great tasting sauce to tantalize my family’s taste buds. It’s winter here, but that is no reason not to barbeque whenever you can. So many people go out looking for great tasting comfort food or tasty smoked and grilled meats, but end up being a bit disappointed, or disgruntled because they paid 40 bucks for a piece of meat, that they could have gotten at their local market for less then ten dollars. I’m here to tell you that you can take a simple cut of beef and transform it to a spicy, mouth-watering, culinary delight. I am getting hungry just thinking about it! I took a tri-tip cut of beef and rubbed it with a product called “Rudy’s Rub” and slow cooked it on my barbeque. I like to season it about ½ hour before I place it on the grill. I slow cooked it and when it was done to perfection I dipped it in Mad Anthony’s Barbeque Sauce. Perfection!

Michael Anthony is probably best known for his role, playing bass in the 80’s rock sensation, “Van Halen”. Currently he is continuing to build his fan base by playing bass in the new all-star band called “Chickenfoot” and producing some of the tastiest barbeque sauces out there. These sauces can be found at Insanechicken.com, my family’s hot sauce/barbeque sauce connection.

People say that many products have what is called “star-power.” This means that people will only buy a product because a “star” has produced it. Well, I think there is some truth to that because that is exactly what I did. I figured that if he makes his sauce as good as he plays bass then I would not be disappointed. I wasn’t! This sauce is good. My wife was even surprised and my five-year-old son just gobbled it up.

Label- The label has a spicy design. Bold letters illustrate Mad Anthony’s name while fire engulfed peppers give a hint to what is inside. The top has a nice formal foil wrapper that has a simple tab that you unwrap to attain that screw top cap. It reminded me of unwrapping a champagne bottle, just without the fear of a nasty hangover! It comes in a generous 16 oz bottle.

Sauce- The sauce is thick and dark. The molasses gives it color as well as a subtle sweetness. It is great for grilling or for dipping your meat in. I found that it clings to the meat unlike some sauces that just run off. As I was eating I found myself wanting more and more. The flavor was very pleasing and went well with the barbequed tri-tip. It smells sweet with a subtle hint of garlic and onion. I found it interesting that one of the ingrediants is fig puree. My wife thought this was a nice addition for flavor. This sauce is not what I would call a “super hot” but it does have a lot of flavor and spice.

Conclusion- I felt comfortable with sharing it with my whole family and trust me, they were glad I did! I would give it a five out of five for flavor and bottle design. I definitely would buy this again a look forward to doing so. It would be a great gift for a barbeque and/or rock n roll fan or collector.

This is “Atomic Eh” telling you to keep it hot and keep it spicy! Enjoy!

Charlie’s Hard Times Honey Mustard Barbeque Sauce – Every now and then a barbecue sauce comes along that makes the others pale in comparison. A sauce so well crafted that it deserves to be put on a pedestal and admired from afar, then admired right on up close. Charlie’s Hard Times Honey Mustard Barbeque sauce is just such a sauce.

Mustard, mustard seed, vinegar, red wine vinegar, molasses, brown sugar, tomato sauce, honey, apple juice, worcestershire sauce, garlic, onion, and spices make up the flavor personality of this beautiful sauce. If you don’t like mustard, you probably won’t like this sauce. Mustard is the star of the show. I love it. A good mustard-based barbecue sauce can bring any steak, roast, ribs, chicken, and even seafood to life. This one is totally off the map. It explores territory never before charted, bringing with it new discoveries in the world of barbecue.

Because of the skillfully combined ingredients, this honey mustard sauce works well on numerous meats, including seafood. In fact, I tried it on some catfish grilled in the backyard, as well as a dip for some deep-fried flounder, and I was in Heaven. That’s another thing about this sauce. Not only is it a fantastic barbecue sauce, sweet and tangy, but it makes a great dip as well. Even works with Chicken McNuggets, which my middle boy eats all the time. He now uses Charlie’s Hard Times Honey Mustard Barbeque Sauce to dip them in.

If you don’t like mustard, like I said, this is probably not for you. It might, however, change your mind. If you’re a mustard fan, though, you will not be able to keep enough of Charlie’s Hard Times brew on your shelf. It’s bound to be a family favorite, both at big backyard cookouts, and even as an everyday sauce you’ll want to use for dipping or decorating with your favorite foods. That’s all I can say about that.

Hello Chili Heads!

“Atomic Eh?” is here to talk to you about another sauce. It’s not a hot sauce, but a barbeque sauce.

Fork’N Halo BBQ Sauce

Original Sin

The sun is shinning today and I am getting ready to put a pork tenderloin on the grill, so I am ready, armed with this interesting sauce that I got from Insane Chicken. I am becoming a big fan of barbeque sauces that pack heat in them. The label says it has a “Devilish touch of heat. “ I hope that means it’s “Atomic!” I have found that there is a huge variety in barbeque sauces out there, so it is sometimes hard to really pinpoint which one might be perfect for you or me. So, for today, I am just going to try to make me happy and afterwards we can work on you!

The sauce has a unique, colorful label. It is a nice shade of red with a devil-like pig that appears to be up to no good. The bottle itself is about 12 oz and you know that if this sauce is really good, that just won’t be enough—there is never enough sauce for me when I find a sauce that I love. They claim to have all natural ingredients. This sauce is a very dark brown. It’s almost black in color and appears, from the outside looking in, to be really thick. The label says it’s good for ribs, chicken, pork, beef, and seafood. (I love how ribs have their own category!) They suggest that we use it for a marinade, a barbeque sauce for glazing, and/or a dipping sauce. I think we will try it for all three. I need to dig a steak out to marinade.

Well life is good! Barbeque is going and I am ready! Looking forward to a great meal with what I hope is good sauce. I couldn’t find a steak, but I found a great pork tenderloin for the grill.

So I pulled the tenderloin off the grill and sliced it up. Just perfect! Juicy and rich. I opened the Fork’N Halo sauce and poured it liberally over the meat. I found that the heat from the meat actually lifted the sauce right off the meat to my sense of smell. I could definitely smell the unsulfured molasses. As I poured it out it was a dark and rich color. When I tasted it the pork really came through. The BBQ sauce is not like some that knock out all the flavor of the meat. It was sweet and savory. It was not hot enough for my taste. In fact I did not notice any heat at all. BUT, I will say this, as I ate the BBQ and savored this sauce with the meat and the other flavor of my food, I found that I had to throw out my traditional take on BBQ. The more I ate, it the better it got. The sauce is flavorful, but not really spicy at first. The heat did build to a comfortable level for my wife. It was definitely not the “Atomic” sauce that I am looking for, but if you like a mild, sweet, and tasty sauce this one might be the one for you! It’s great on the pork and right now I need to take a moment and serve it up to my family!

My wife says that that it looks tasty. As she tries it, she says the rich, sweetness, really compliments the pork. The molasses reminds her of a bourbon sauce. She agreed with me that it had very little spice and heat at first, but again says that it is a good compliment to the meal. The flavor reminds her of a very dark chocolate in that it is rich and compliments the flavor of the food. The more she dips, the more she likes it. We also recommend it on kabobs that have pineapple, red onion, and mushrooms in the ingredients. Definitely add something good to your Luau!

Thank you to Insanechicken.com for the suggestion of trying this sauce.

I will enjoy it and I look forward to what your site may hold for me in the very near future. Doing reviews for you is like an education to the pallet. Have a great weekend my chili head friends!

Enjoy

Sincerely,

Hey fellow Chili Heads!

This is “Atomic Eh?” wondering what is spicy in your life? Life is good, but even better when I have a new bottle of the “Hot Stuff” to talk about! Insane Chicken.com hooked me up with a great barbeque sauce. I went to the store and picked up some chicken and a nice prime rib steak. I love being able to go to a store, speak to the butcher and ask for exactly what I want. A lot of people don’t know that you can do that. Some stores will even marinate free of charge…all you have to do is ask. So in this case I asked for a solid 2 inch, marbled steak that would just go perfect with my sauce. The sauce I want to introduce you to is:

“Quaker Steak & Lube”

#1

Buckeye

BBQ

Sauce.

“Best Wings USA”

Looking at the bottle, right off I am impressed by the flip top. The label seems a bit plain at first glance but then I start to notice things. Hmmmm…looks like this sauce ranks pretty hot on the manufacturer’s scale. The producers say that this is great on wings, chicken, burgers, ribs, steak and more. I wonder if that more includes waffles? The sauce looks thick and the bottle is rather large. Great packaging. Definitely going to catch my eye and cause me to want to try it.

So I flip the top and take a deep breath….oh yeah. It smells good! Rich, savory, sweet are just some of the words I would use to describe it. A little hint of vinegar and garlic also is apparent in the sauce. So I take a moment to read the ingredients and I find to my dismay that one of the ingredients is labeled, “hot sauce” What’s up with that? They mixed ketchup, brown sugar, Tabasco, and some “hot sauce” to create this elixir! Well, I like hot sauce, so I decide that I am going to keep moving forward!
The barbeque sauce is thick and very tasty. Though the ingredients are not very original, I must say that I do like it. When I tasted it the first thing I thought of was the sweet flavor…and the heat! This is spicy! As I am dipping my steak in it, the effect of the “hot sauce” is readily apparent. Though my mouth was on fire, I couldn’t help but keep consuming it. This would make a great wing sauce. It definitely ranks “Atomic” on my scale. So get a grip, take a sip, and then cover ALL YOUR BARBEQUE with it! This is “Atomic Eh?” thanking Insane Chicken.com for a great sauce and a great addition to any meal…except maybe waffles.

It’s definitely a 4 out of five!

So keep it hot and keep it spicy!
&
Enjoy!
