Backdraft Fire Hot Sauce Review
Backdraft Fire Sauce: The Fireman’s Nightmare! Dedicated to all the brave firefighters around the world!Head out to your local grocer or specialty store and take a cursory glance at their hot sauce selection. Even many of the stores that offer a wide selection have few sauces that aren’t bright red. Backdraft catches your eye with its yellowish brown hue,and specks of peppery bobs floating around, offering you a texture that is obvious through the bottle.
A glance at the order of ingredients offers you a glimpse into the mystery of Backdraft. You know this sauce will be more sauce and less hot because the first ingredients are sugar, yellow mustard, water, light brown sugar, tomato paste, herbs…and a few more items before we get to habanero peppers.
The peppers low down on the ingredients list often means that the sauce offers other flavors, too, not just concentrating on the heat.
When you smell this sauce, the mustard hits you first, with aromas of brown sugar and perhaps a touch of salt and pepper. Sure enough, salt and pepper are the final ingredients in this sauce. This sauce immediately makes me think of pouring as much as possible onto a Nathan’s hot dog, dipping fries into it, and then adding a bit more to my friend’s burger for good measure.
Sure enough, all of those ingredients make for an interesting and complex sauce. The first tastes yield a sweet flavor, and the heat comes as almost an aftertaste, lingering in the back of your mouth as if to remind you that you had it. The heat is not intense, but more of an all over warm feeling for your mouth.
Since the first thought that flashed into my head upon smelling this sauce was of hot dogs, that is precisely what I headed for to test out the Backdraft. What a perfect pairing. The mustard overtones complement the hot dog perfectly, and the sweetness begs you to add some green relish to the equation. The warm heat from the sauce and the mustardy sweetness eliminate any need for ketchup that you previously thought you had.
That sweetness-plus-heat combo means that Backdraft Fire Sauce pairs well with lots of different meats – bring it to your next BBQ, and be sure not to forget to spread some on your next grilled pork tenderloin. Mix some with cream cheese for a great cocktail hour cracker spread. Use it as a marinade or grilling sauce in a pinch. Although the addition of a mustard flavor seems unusual, I added this sauce to my pad thai takeout and the result was awesome. The sweetness in the sauce complements the crunchy peanuts and tart limes.
The Bottom Line: Don’t expect a ton of heat! This sauce may be called ‘Backdraft’, but it is not going to blow you away (despite being prepared with habaneros). The sauce offers mild heat and is packed with flavor. Take it to your grill and you won’t be disappoint.
